[Every time Yamaguchi proves himself nice, Oikawa's usual thoughts stop in their tracks. He's used to everyone understanding immediately why someone wouldn't like him. Yamaguchi's just... nice. It's uncomfortably charming.]
You really don't have to call me "Oikawa-san", Yama-chan.
[A waitress, as pink as the rest of the cafe, appears and shepherds them to a table on the edge. There's a fuchsia (pink) candle in the middle with maroon and lilac glitter sprinkled on it. In a fit of obnoxiousness, Oikawa pulls out one of the chairs and holds it for Yamaguchi to sit on.] I really am glad you came, you know.
[Yamaguchi's not talking too loudly, and when the waitress approaches, he immediately shuts up so as to accommodate her greeting. He lets the topic of nicknames go for the moment, while he and Oikawa are led to their table. In that time, he's distracted yet again by just how vibrantly pink everything is. Yamaguchi only snaps back to the present when Oikawa pulls the chair out for him, and he's nearly too embarrassed by that gesture alone to sit down.]
You...um, you don't have to...th-thanks!! [For that, and the compliment both. Yamaguchi's not usually this flustered, honestly; but then he's not usually alone in the company of a sort of super-charming guy who seems inexplicably happy to share his company, either. Combined with the fact that Seijou's still a rival school, and that Oikawa keeps calling this (treating this??) like an actual date despite his protests, Yamaguchi's pretty damn flustered for a teenager meeting up with a casual friend.]
...This place is kinda different than I expected...
[Draping his coat over the back of his chair, Oikawa takes his own seat. As far as he's concerned, this is a date, whether Yamaguchi wants to call it that or not. Admittedly, he does this to Iwaizumi as well but that's more about making him swear and pull faces than what he's up to with Yamaguchi. Which... He doesn't want to think about because he thought he knew what he was doing here but that doesn't explain why he's smiling properly rather than his usual insincere mask.]
What were you expecting? I wouldn't take you anywhere but the best. [He might have picked it for the atmosphere but their food is nice or he would have found somewhere better.]
I suppose it is a little. But there's some red over there. [He points - it's a heart shaped balloon floating next to the counter, out of a pot plant like a mutant tree.]
he can be a little shit too but he needs tsukki to hide behind
This is the pinkest place I've ever seen. [Which wouldn't necessarily be bad—Yamaguchi's not someone that cares too much about colors by themselves—but the overall effect is pretty garish.]
now all I can picture is yamaguchi sending tsukki out like a pokemon to tell oikawa he's a dick
Wait, show me? [Emphasis on 'me'—if nothing else, it manages to distract Yamaguchi from the pink decor as he looks at Oikawa in surprise.] ...How come?
... don't get me started, I'd think too hard about pokemon types (tsukki = ice oikawa = dragon ohko)
[Well, he likes talking to him, and so far spending time with him is going okay. He does wonder about why he enjoys that but right now he'd rather talk to Yamaguchi than get into uncomfortable introspection.]
yaaaas meanwhile yamaguchi is the normal-est of normal types
I do! [He hesitates. That shouldn't have been a surprise. Has he read Yamaguchi wrong? He doesn't often but there are always exceptions.] Don't you like spending time with me?
[Oikawa's smile falls completely. Yamaguchi didn't say no. Maybe he meant that to be reassuring but in between teasing and flirting Oikawa managed to get the impression that Yamaguchi was at least entertained by his conversation and he's only realising now that he never said as much.]
I'm sorry! S-Sorry, what I mean is...um...no one's ever said that to me before, Oikawa-san.
And so you surprised me by saying that you wanted to spend time with me! That's all.
[And Yamaguchi's blushing again, hoo boy. But, it's 100% true—only Tsukishima could Yamaguchi be completely sure actually wanted to hang out with him, and Tsukki never said those kinds of things out loud, unless forced or sarcastically. Having someone cool like Oikawa say it so easily feels...
[Unexpectedly, a bright smile lights up on Yamaguchi's face.]
Strawberry shortcake? You like that, Oikawa-san?
That's Tsukki's favorite, too! [Mentioning his best friend's favorite food offhand seems an odd thing to get excited about, but Yamaguchi tends to draw comfort from familiar things. Shortcake, at least, he knows how to make conversation about, however insignificant it might be.]
[Well, that's an interesting thing to know. He doesn't know how yet, but Oikawa can probably manage to make a few digs at Tsukishima using that information the next time he sees him. Which... might not be the best idea, now he's thinks about it. He wants to keep Yamaguchi interested in him and making his best friend hate him wouldn't help that. Though Tsukishima did seem to hate everyone at least a little.]
Is there anyone who doesn't like it? Maybe you should take Tsukki-chan here sometime. [And then take a picture of his face once he sees all the pink.]

That's not really what I meant. [He doesn't mean to sound ungrateful.
It's just so pink.]
no subject
Ah, then what did you mean, Yama-chan?

[That'd be a rather mean joke of his ex-girlfriend to pull. Bringing him to a place like this.]
yamaguchi is too nice for someone like oikawa to befriend
he can be a little shit too but he needs tsukki to hide behind
now all I can picture is yamaguchi sending tsukki out like a pokemon to tell oikawa he's a dick
ituergklfd but is it super effective??

You do?
so normal he's the only pokemon cheren uses any more.
ahoge game too strong
Wait, Oikawa-san, that's not what I meant...!
[he doesn't know why the thought that Oikawa might hold that misconception alarms him so much, but Yamaguchi really doesn't want to hurt his feelings]

Then what did you mean, Yama-chan?

You can't have been talking to the right people, Yama-chan.
[He distracts himself with the menu, he knows around a third of the items on it are some variation of pink but they all taste excellent.]
What were you thinking of ordering? [He bites back on his reflex to add "something as sweet as you?"]
no subject
Oh! I'll look now. I don't know what they have, but if you like it, I'm sure it'll taste good...
no subject
[And if Yamaguchi gets it Oikawa can steal some. Yamaguchi probably won't even hit him for it, which is a bonus.]
no subject

Good idea, Oikawa-san! If this place has good cake, I bet Tsukki'll like it!
[Tsukishima will probably pull a face at all the pink the way Yamaguchi did, but hey, good food is good food.]
no subject
Just make it clear to him it won't be a date when you take him here. Right, Yama-chan?
[Or Oikawa might get jealous.]

There's no way he would. Iwaizumi would have to follow them with it.
