[He likes dipping his bread in his milkshake so he shouldn't judge. Especially when, given french fries, his temptation is also to dip them in his milkshake, a habit Iwaizumi actually succeeded in driving out of him. But he is judging. Just a little.]
You like your french fries not crispy? [Now there is a real undercurrent of laughter in his words. Hopefully Yamaguchi won't take offence.]
A little weird, Yama-chan. [Has he not told anyone that his favourite food is limp french fries before or is it just that Oikawa is the only one to think it's hilarious and adorable?] Most people think that the good thing about french fries is their crispness.
I'll keep that in mind. [Because obviously he'll be brining Yamaguchi fries at some point and heaven forbid they're not appropriately droopy. He's disproportionally charmed by this fact about Yamaguchi and a little bit of it is that Yamaguchi bothered to tell him it.]
[Still smiling, Yamaguchi continues sipping out of the straw without paying attention, only realizing it when it begins to suck through air instead of the finished shake.]
Ah. [He glances down at the cup, confirming ruefully it's indeed empty.] S'all gone...I meant to leave you some, sorry.
[He averts his gaze, figures he'd start blushing now. Yamaguchi's just so eager] Here or somewhere else. There are lots of places that serve a nice milkshake.
But...I mean, w-with...me?? [Yes, he's still in shock over that. STILL. It'd be easy enough to believe if Oikawa was someone he'd been on friendly terms with, or one his own teammates, but when it comes to anyone that could be considered a date date Yamaguchi's insecurity runs deep.]
[Yamaguchi might be freaking out about being a date but all his fuss is making Oikawa remember that he hasn't had a date with someone he likes before. That if he messes this up he could get hurt. But Yamaguchi is worryingly worth it.]
[With a strangled noise, Yamaguchi pulls his hands back to press them over his face. He hunches over the table again, red-faced; but this time, it doesn't seem to be from embarrassment.]
O-Oikawa-san! [His voice is a little muffled, but not distressed, like he's actually happy to be hearing this (for all it makes him uncomfortably warm in the face).] I-I don't know what to say, to a thing like that...!
I can't wait, Yama-chan. Though we should probably finish up here if you're ready to? [His milkshake's finished and his bread is gone, they can't really justify staying too long without ordering more and he doesn't want anything.]
Ah, r-right! I am. [Glad to have something to do with his hands, Yamaguchi reaches to pull his wallet out of his jeans pocket. He holds it idly in his lap waiting for the waitress to return so they can pay.]
Whoa, really? [He looks startled, but not unhappily so. The thought never crossed Yamaguchi's mind that Oikawa might want to pay for him.] That's really nice of you, Oikawa-san!
I do recall something about telling you I'd show you nice I am. [He twists to pull his wallet out of his coat pocket on the back of the chair, so he can talk without Yamaguchi seeing his face.] I really didn't think I'd convince you.
Sorry, Oikawa-san...I guess I didn't think so either, back then, but...
You seem...different in person, somehow. [There's a glimmer of sincerity beneath the veneer of Oikawa's charm and annoying affectations, which makes Yamaguchi want to stick around even when he's feeling embarrassed or in doubt.]
[He's only more sincere in person because it's impossible for him not to be. It's so much easier to make everything sound like a joke over text.
He doesn't quite know what to say to Yamaguchi's comment though. Different could be good or bad, and it's not like they'll stop texting - he hopes they won't stop texting.
He awkwardly clears his throat as the waitress shuffles over and he pulls a note and a handful of coins out to pay for their food, standing up from the table as she leaves again with a smile.]
Have you had fun, Yama-chan? [He tries not to let it show that he's legitimately asking rather than confirming what he should already know but he's sure something will give him away.]

Um...yes...is that weird? [That's what he says, at least, his meaning is closer to 'Is that bad?']
