red & green ( "the worst that can happen")

[ So a guy walks into a cave with his jolteon...

Except there's no joke to follow that up, and it was more along the lines of "snuck in while nobody was looking because they're suckers and you have to be the current Champion to waltz in hassle free, what the heck is up with that".

But whatever. Details schmetails.

It's quiet for the meantime, Green not entirely sure if that's a good thing or not in the long run with some of the wild pokémon they've encountered so far: they're untamed, but they're not dumb. It's a small welcome regardless, to hear nothing but the same drip, drip, drip that's been following him for an hour now.

Or however long him and the team've been attempting to navigate the maze of stone and whoops it's a wall of geodude and graveler. He sits with his bag before him, Jolteon curled nearby with the pins on his back glowing for a light -- something that Green's about to give the pokémon a help with, finally getting out the potion he was looking for. ]

Hey, come here. [ The jolteon lifts his head, staring a moment - ] C'mon, you've gotta keep your strength up. [ - before obediently getting up onto his feet to rest nearer to his trainer. So far, the plan of Cerulean Cave is simple enough: they'll recuperate for a while longer, not bump into any weird childhood pals wearing dumb hats, finally find that super duper pokémon people are raving about about and have a Good Day when they beat it.

Absolutely nothing could go wrong with any of this. ]

[It took over an hour of pacing and biting his nails before Red could even work up the courage to enter the unknown dungeon. Everyone, from the Gym Leaders to the Elite Four to the gatekeeper, had been close-lipped about what exactly lay within. He didn't insist on asking. Red had traveled enough of Kanto to know that whatever unnatural, angry deity lay within the rocky caves of Cerulean should in an ideal world be left alone.

But Red had also traveled enough to know that "should" wasn't going to stop anyone, least of all a pokémon hungry for revenge. Red's stomach churned at the thought of how angry the creature must be, what it could do in its rage. He understood. Completely. That was the frightening thing.

Once he had his affairs in order at the Indigo Plateau, Red sets off, taking a few weeks' detour through the region to find the three creatures he'd need to fight his way through the cave if he wanted to survive long enough to throw the Master Ball. He knew he'd been saving it all this time for a reason.

Red had a plan. He knew anything and everything could go wrong, as a matter of course—that's how things always went, since he left Pallet Town—but at least if he died in this cave, he could say he tried. That was more than a lot of people could say. That was more than Green could...

The sudden sound of voices up ahead startled Red out of his dark thoughts, involuntarily loosening his grip on the Max Repel in his hand. Who on Earth would be traveling a forbidden dungeon? No one else should have access to it but him.

Red knew that voice.]

[ The head of the potion bottle gets knocked back when Jolteon raises his nose, eyes narrowing and ears flicking to listen more closely to their surroundings, and for those likely someones within it -- with the grass and poison types lurking around, the tinge of an unpleasant scent nearby was not safe news.

The boy blinks, but quickly realises that there's something out there that's caught the pokémon's attention and he keeps himself from asking the question in his head. It's in a whisper that he tells him to dim the lights, and now he's listening out as well, a hand making its way over to his waist to his pokéballs. Just in case.

Come out, come out, wherever you aaaare- ]

[Red weighs his options.

Leave. Go, and let Green remain behind, free to continue exploring and possibly find the MEWTWO first.
Avoid. Creep around the rock formations in a way that will let Red steer clear of the other trainer's line of vision. Never learning how Green got here when he shouldn't be.
Or.
Fight.

Red's sick of fighting. He hates it. He hates being an Elite, being Kanto's Champion. Still, he walks forward, toward an infinitesimally dim patch of light created by cracks high up in the bedrock ceiling kilometers above their heads. If he doesn't look the other trainer in the eyes, maybe Green won't call a battle, Red thinks..

Still. His hand twitches on Pikachu's pokéball at his belt. Just in case.]

[ Please, Red. Like Green believes in silly unwritten trainer rules as 'in their sight, time to fight'. He much more prefers 'Green does what Green wants.'

The sounds, if they're feet, are too light to be of the heavier types he's come across so far in the underground. Probably not parasect, but -- gloom? No...

A shadow grows over the rocky wall (okay, not a gloom -- a hypno?) and the way the shape it belongs to walks in sight with an air of total (seemingly) obliviousness of his own presence pauses Green, until the smirk eventually comes. Heh heh, he's totally more aware than Red. Of course! ]

Hey Red! [ His voice sounds louder than he thought it'd be, but whatever, who cares now! ] Look alive! Don't think you're safe just because you smell!

[ Yeah, that's totally a max repel stinking the air. Or Red's natural scent! ]
theylookedaway: (There once was a boy named Red.)

[personal profile] theylookedaway 2015-01-05 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Red thought he was expecting it, but still, the sound of Green's loud voice echoing across the cave makes him flinch. He automatically glances around frantically in the following moments to see if anyone else (anything else) might have heard, a habit he picked up all the way back at Silph.

But, nothing arrives. Either the Repel is doing its job, or the pokémon number fewer on this level than the last one. Reproachfully, Red turns toward Green with a glare, and puts a finger over his lips as if to tell the other boy 'Shut up!' He tries not to let on how badly he feels like shaking from being spooked like that.]

[ Boring. He doesn't get through a full eyeroll, glancing down to Jolteon; the pokémon is looking elsewhere, himself wondering about the others that could've been attracted by the sound of his trainer's voice. Fine fine, you two. Geez.

Green gets up into his feet with a sigh, bag straps gripped in his hands. ]

Whatever, don't get all huffy about it. [ But he shifts from nonchalant to finding a reason to brighten up. ] Let me guess, you heard about that pokémon too, right?
theylookedaway: (He won against trainers and gym leaders.)

[Red stiffens. So Green knows.

With body language that's suddenly hostile, Red stalks over in the direction of his rival and approaches Green against his own instincts, trying to make it clear that the subject is not a friendly one. How did Green hear about MEWTWO, and how much does he know? Was it rumors, or is there another source of information like those diaries floating around?

Red doesn't physically grab the other boy—in fact, he stops more than arm's length away—but, he folds his arms nonetheless in a way that clearly indicates he wants an explanation.]
pokerival: (amazing)

[personal profile] pokerival 2015-01-05 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ --That's strange. He watches Red, back straightening some to the force that the other boy brings with his steps, but he doesn't come in as close as Green expects him to.

But it's not as if there's anything to actually be scared of in front of him. Green puts a hand on his waist, an understanding look washing over his face as he does. Oh, he gets it now -- Red thinks he can act like he isn't still a midget now that he's Champ? ]

So you got it, Green Oak. [ Hah. ] Well, that's if you can find them before I do.

[ Over his shoulder the straps go; okay, now he can put both hands on his sides, combating Red's posture with his own challenging one. ] You can't hog all the fun. I was still Champion too, you know?

[Red shakes his head at once at the mention of Green finding 'it' first, before Red. The latter's angry glare dissipates at once, replaced by a wide-eyed look that's openly urgent, maybe even just shy of...afraid?

In fact, Red's whole-body stiffness gives away an air of near-franticness. His arm and upper body twitches forward, for a split second, like he's about to reach out for Green to grab his arm. But, Red ultimately doesn't. He can't make himself initiate the contact, however unlikely it would be for Green to retaliate. Instead, Red's arm stiffly lowers again with a piercing look at Green, trying to convey to him that this time is different. It's not about who was Champion; the monster in this cave is dangerous. More than Team Rocket. More than possibly anything.]

[ Green watches.

And then eventually, he shrugs. ]
You're a funny guy and all Red, but I don't have time for playing around. Who knows how deep this cave goes?

[ He turns, getting Jolteon's attention by the sound of his name. The creature takes steps away from the two, peering towards the path not yet taken. ]

Don't worry! I'll tell you all about it when I find them and beat them. The rumours sound like a bunch of phooey anyway. An unbeatable pokémon? Yeah right!

[Red makes a sound in his throat that might be words, coming from someone else—out of his mouth, it sounds like nothing more than one long, inarticulate snarl, the noise of a person that hasn't spoken in weeks or months and is out of practice.

Heart beating wildly in his chest, Red runs around toward the branching path and moves himself to be in Green's way, one arm outstretched but still not quite within reach of the other trainer. The other hand rests at his belt, where the first of his six pokéballs are waiting. Red doesn't want to battle. Not anymore. But if Green wants to go this way no matter what, and won't listen to reason, Red intends to stop him one way or another.]

[ Uh oh Red's got a meowth in his throat, quick someone help him.

Green's too cool to spare time watching Red's interpretative dancing anyway, and he's more than happy to leave him in his (and Jolteon's) dust as they go to find this rumoured pok-- hey wait excuse you what are you doing there.

Irritation peaks inside Green's throat, but he puts on a challenging face. What was with this guy? ]

You're really serious about this, aren't you? [ But what if he is? Maybe that makes Green want to find this thing even more. ] Give me a break! But hey, if you're that hungry for a fight, pal...

[ A hand of his own slips down to one of his pokéballs, fingers curling over the sphere and then pausing for effects. Just to keep Red on his toes when instead, his other hand whips out- ] Blind him!

[ It takes a moment, but understanding, Jolteon's body glows like the colour of the sun in one second, a more blinding light than blasting and surrounding the area in the next. Already, the ball held in Green's hand pulled from his belt and the pokémon inside released onto the ground beside him. This is a pokémon more connected to the plan being put in place- ]

Come on Alakazam!

[ It's an escape plan -- one that if isn't interrupted, will allow Green and his pokémon to make a disappearance. Arceus bless teleporting pokémon. ]
theylookedaway: (Red won that fight like all the others.)

[personal profile] theylookedaway 2015-01-05 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Green doesn't need to worry about being followed: the moment Jolteon's spiky fur begins to glow, Red panics, his mind's eye flooded not with memories of Flash attack but rather Electrode and Selfdestruct.

With a strangled scream, Red throws himself to the ground and flattens out there , covering his head using both hands and shielding the pokéballs at his waist with his own body, curled around them. He's too freaked out to hear Green calling for Alakazam to Teleport him, and by the time Red registers that Green isn't actually attacking him, the other trainer is long already gone.

No. He can't. Red can't let him.]
...! [With a weak, shaking breath, Red gets slowly back up to his feet and casts a furtive glance around the now-dark-again surroundings in the dungeon. Cursing his own stupidity and cowardice (not even an attack just a dirty trick just like Team Rocket–), he takes the first pokéball at his waist and releases Pikachu, as much for his own peace of mind as for protection. The electric-type buzzes at him, concerned, and Red unthinkingly scoops it up to hold tight against his chest. Time to go find Green.]

[ Green opens his eyes to a softer sight, the loud and curdling sound that came from Red's throat ringing in his ears. It wasn't just a sound though -- that was a scream. That's obvious once Green really thinks and registers it, but why would a scream like that ever come out from Red's mouth? And over nothing at all-

Really, just what the heck was up with that guy these days?

Handwaving, glares, and yelling that was so over the top it whizzed past funny and right into plain creepy. Green looks behind him, but -- it's not like Red wouldn't be fine. Maybe he just overreacted. Maybe he's overreacting right now, even be worried. He could've spooked Red really badly.

He shakes his head, and motions to Alakazam and Jolteon. ]
Come on.

[ Whatever, he'll figure it out later. They had a pokémon to find.

That pokémon finds them.

And it knew of them, of all of them, there in the depths of Cerulean Cave disturbing its territory. Other pokémon were drawn out by the commotion along the way, but everything calms to in time. And actually, this time, it really is too calm, and Green's the first to notice. They couldn't hear anything. Not even their own footsteps. Alakazam hadn't noticed, and not even Jolteon.

The attack happens suddenly.

They don't go down quietly. Not all of them get the chance to go down, though Alakazam, Jolteon, and Arcanine's bodies are silent soon enough, scattered over the cave floor with the pokéballs of their team mates - knocked from Green's hand, ripped away from his belt - joining them. They're unconscious, the only kindness shown to any of them during the bout, and even Green himself was left barely aware of anything after the force that hurled his back against the cave wall. If bones were broken after that Green doesn't know, down but too stubborn to stay still despite every ache shooting through him and an eye vision where nothing will stay still.

But he sees the blur of his own hand scraping forward, and the blur Arcanine's body to his left, and -- there, there's a pokéball, right there, shaking and rattling, right in front of him. And if he could reach for it (and the mass of white; it turns-- and walks, slowly, slowly), if he could get it, take it back-

(closer, closer)

He won't leave it there- ]

[ So Red's come down from the hunk of rock he'd made his disappearance on, finally putting worried mothers out of their misery and Green with, well, a bit more company than usual if the occasional visits of the other boy to his gym were any indication. Not that Green asked for it. It was odd at first, seeing the guy around more after years of not, but there was always something amusing to brush that away. Like Red's face. (Heh.)

It's lunch time - or Green's decided it is - after Red's ended up at his gym like a lost puppy again while trying to lose the scent of certain individuals, and whatever, who cares about reasons, Green wants to eat so those gym trainers can keep doing what they like, he's heading to the break room for food.

There's a kitchen area shoved in the corner, lined with cupboards above and a fridge included. Tables and chairs occupy the same space, and then a more comfortable looking sofa sits at the other end of the room with a bookcase. How cosy. Green doesn't look back to Red when he leads him in, going straight over to the fridge to peer inside without a word. Was it here, was it here...

Make yourself at home if you want, Red. ]

[If Green's that badly thrown, he may not even hear Red coming: the pounding of ratty sneakers echos against the cave floor in the absence of a battle, the deepest corner of the dungeon eerily silent after MEWTWO paused in its rampage. Trying to be stealthy is no good at this point, he thinks, the creature will tear him apart.

It took Red long enough to navigate his way to the place where he knows they're waiting; his rival and the monster in this cave. He halts at the entrance, taking in the sight of Green and his fallen team. Cold flashes suddenly in his veins, making him feel scared and sick. Red's body is numb and his mind void with shock. They aren't—they can't be–]

[...Wait. There! After his gaze stays frozen on the other trainer for several long seconds, Red sees Green's hand twitching in the darkness. He's reaching (despite obvious pain) for an unopened pokéball on the ground. The sight of it kicks Red's mind back into gear—there's still time, he can't afford to waste it now. If this creature gets worked up into a true rage it won't be able to be stopped.

When it turns at last toward Red, giving him a sharp Mew! of reproach, Red already has his hand on the last pokéball at his belt. He tosses it into the air and releases the creature inside, silently pointing forward to MEWTWO in direction to attack.]
...!!

[A blast of chill overtakes the cavern. White, icy frost blinds everything for a moment, the cold air rushes from the Articuno's wings to the surrounding walls. It fills the entire dungeon in moments. Articuno warbles a loud Gyaoo! before it attacks, flapping its wings once more in a Blizzard. The pokémon begin to battle, Red at the helm.

In the meanwhile, though Red's Pikachu darts over toward Green. Ducking around the attacks flying through the cave, it scampers to Green with fur bristling and a soft growl of warning. The electric-type is clearly upset with him, probably over what it understands of Green's previous encounter with its trainer, but it refrains from attacking. Instead, Pikachu sniffs at him to make sure he's conscious, which is what Red asked it to do.]

[ Pikachu you little punk this is not the time for your attitude--

The chill spreads through the space, and the sound of battle is more deafening in Green's ears when he's not the one part of the fight. There's some form of an idea of what's going on, but Green doesn't - can't - turn his head to see the spectacle that's taking place. It doesn't occupy his mind to anyway, his head already filled with the urgency of the situation, and his frustrations at unfulfilling them. He needs to get to his pokémon, put them away, get up onto his feet and do something.

But that's impossible, with his body to the point of exhaustion. That outstretched arm is motionless by the time Pikachu scurries over, but there's still a quivering rise and fall to his body, a scrunching of his eyelids. He's not dead, and he's still somewhat conscious -- but only barely.

Have fun with your battling please keep it away from this side of the room thanks in advance, wake me up when September ends. ]

[ Oh, look, the funny thing spoke. ]

Why would I do a thing like that for? If I'm that tired I'll just close up and go home.

[ There's a cracking-like sound, and then Green takes a step back from the fridge with a plastic container in his hands, the lid off. ]

Want some? [ He tilts it some, just so Red can see the contents. ] It's pasta.
theylookedaway: (Red knew someone had to stop them.)

[personal profile] theylookedaway 2015-01-06 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Soon enough, Pikachu is replaced by Blastoise, who hunches protectively over Green with a grumbling sound while the electric-type goes to round up the scattered pokéballs. There's not much they can do about the unconscious members of Green's team that are already out, but Red's careful to keep Articuno, then Zapdos, and Moltres, occupying MEWTWO on one side of the cavern so the battle is free of casualties.

Red's got no mind for Green right now, he's struggling to stay upright himself just from the force of the shock waves lashing through the cave. He could throw the Master Ball, but—that won't stop this creature's terrible anger. Most pokémon battle out of instinct, but this one seems almost incapable of thinking of anything else. MEWTWO shows no reaction whatsoever to taking out the first of Red's legendary birds, nor the second, and despite the savagery it possesses Red can't help but feel sorry for it. It's suffered so much, in order to be the strongest, yet it still isn't satisfied. Red wonders if maybe it should never have been created in the first place. It would have been kinder.

The legendary birds hold out as long as they can, which is no small feat given MEWTWO seems capable of healing itself. Finally, when Moltres is on the verge of fainting, Red makes his choice and tightens his grip on the Master Ball. Bile rises in his throat, despite himself, and despite Green laying injured on the ground only meters away. Red promised himself a long time ago he would never use his gift from Silph Co's president, would never abuse the power to capture a pokémon that he hadn't given a fair fight to earn. But, short of battling MEWTWO into submission, there doesn't seem to be much alternative for them now. It's the lesser of two evils considering what damage MEWTWO might do if anyone else finds it here.]

... ... [Steeling his nerves, Red aims for the hunched-over form of MEWTWO before him and tosses. He holds his breath anxiously as the Master Ball lands and opens, trapping the psychic pokémon inside. The cave goes impossibly quiet for a moment, silence deafening, as Red watches the ball twitch once.

And then it's over. The ball goes still, and Red forces himself to approach and pick it up. He closes his eyes in a silent apology as he pulls out his Pokédex, recording MEWTWO's information before allowing the ball to be digitized from his hand and transferred to the PC. MEWTWO is not a pokémon he can fight with. Red doubts anyone can. He might let it out again, someday, but not here.

Feeling weak with the rush of adrenaline just now dimming in his veins, Red forces himself to approach Green and Blastoise on the floor. Time to get up, idiot. You're welcome.]
