[Oikawa should be given a medal for leaving his phone in his pocket and not whipping it out to take a photo of Yamaguchi's face. It's a (rather adorable) natural marvel.]

If you do this just from me reminding you you're cute, I can't imagine what you're going to do if I try and kiss you. [He carefully says "if" rather than "when" even though unless something goes horribly wrong it's definitely a "when" kind of situation.]

Yamaguchi not being interested in him seems less and less likely by the minute.]

I can hardly see your freckles when you blush like that, Yama-chan. [He says lightly, fondly. He's got a ridiculous attachment to those freckles already.]

[It takes Yamaguchi a moment to process that—when he does, all that really gets through his head is 'freckles.' With a sudden, startled look, as though he'd forgotten about them, Yamaguchi suddenly ducks his head down so his hair falls across his face. It's just long enough to cast shadows over the freckles on his cheeks.]

Ah. ...Th-They're always worse after the summer... [Yamaguchi doesn't exactly consider being freckled an attractive feature, and so assumes that Oikawa wouldn't either (despite all evidence to the contrary).]

[Oh no, when he does that Oikawa can see hardly anything of Yamaguchi's face, including his freckles. :(]

I wouldn't say worse, Yama-chan. [Partly, he sees them as a sign of Yamaguchi's effort. If they get more noticeable in summer, then that means he's out in the sun and Oikawa can only imagine one reason for that and it's a reason he approves of whole heartedly.]

Well...there's a lot more of them. [He sounds a bit depressed about it.] Hopefully they'll fade a bit by the next season.

I'd miss them. [He says it simply, with a smile. If Yamaguchi doesn't like them then he probably shouldn't say that he does - it's Yamaguchi's skin, he should be happy with it - but still, it adds to his charm.]

[Yamaguchi glances up, not looking so much disbelieving as confused. He honestly thinks he's just misheard him.]

Miss what? My freckles? [Naaaah.]

Yes. They're cute. [Like you.]

[Yep, there's the blush again that Oikawa's probably accustomed to by now—at least this time, it doesn't seem to rob Yamaguchi of his ability to speak. He looks totally taken aback.]

Y...You do, Oikawa-san? [But they're weird.]

[He's grateful Yamaguchi can still speak, even if it's to ask so obvious a question.]

I do. Is there a reason I shouldn't, Yama-chan?

[A reason? It's pretty obvious, at least in Yamaguchi's opinion.]

...They're kinda ugly-looking, you know? Not a lot of people have them.

I think they're the opposite of ugly-looking. And I don't think that something being rare makes it unattractive.

[And he thinks Yamaguchi is attractive, perhaps out of proportion for his actual looks. But his freckles are an asset in Oikawa's book.]

[Unthinkingly, Yamaguchi's fingertips reach up to absently touch a few of the freckles on his face. He doesn't seem to be aware he's doing it, still focused wide-eyed on Oikawa sitting across from him.]

Y...You don't think they look bad? [This is clearly not something he's heard before—even if people don't usually tell him outright these days that his freckles make him look acne-faced or weird, they still tend to imply it's a pity he doesn't have clearer skin.]

[Yamaguchi might not notice his touch but Oikawa does and he wants to try touching them too. But it's a little too far to reach across the table and make it look casual, so he forces himself to sit still and watch without touching.]

I said I think they're cute, didn't I?

[Yamaguchi can't hold Oikawa's eyes anymore, so he drops his gaze down to the table. He remains stunned into silence for a few more long seconds before he can speak.]

You're probably...the only person I've met who's ever felt that way.

[He bites back on asking about Tsukishima's opinion of them. He knows asking would prove he's an asshole and he's busy trying to make Yamaguchi happy right now. Even if he'd really like to know.]

Maybe they just didn't say, Yama-chan? But I like them enough for plenty of people.

[Even if Oikawa asked, Yamaguchi's not certain he would know the answer. It's not as if Yamaguchi ever speaks to Tsukishima about his insecurities, let alone ones as personal as the issues he has with his appearance.]

...I-It's really nice to hear you say that. [He swallows, struggling not to let his voice crack the way it desperately wants to, all of a sudden.] Oikawa-san.

But do you believe me, Yama-chan? [He asks with a tilt of his head, genuinely curious.]

Um...

Y...Yes...? [Asked timidly, like he's afraid that by daring to believe Oikawa's words he's somehow inviting the setter to take them back, maybe throw an insult in their place]

[His smile turns happy. Yamaguchi believes him this time.]

I'm glad, Yama-chan.

[Yamaguchi can only gape for a moment, caught totally off guard by the obvious, brilliant sincerity in Oikawa's smile. His other smiles didn't look anything like that, in hindsight—so then, what does this one mean? Aside from the fact that Oikawa's...really, kinda cute when he smiles so genuinely. Yamaguchi swallows dryly.]

M...Me too.

[Yamaguchi's reply sees away the sincerity, but he's still smiling. He's still marvelling a little that he likes Yamaguchi so much. That Yamaguchi seems to think the parts of him that are actually real are good as well as his false charm.]

Now finish off my milkshake, before he goes to waste.

[Well, now that Yamaguchi's seen what Oikawa looks like when he's really happy, getting a forced or incomplete smile immediately afterward is just going to make him anxious. Was Yamaguchi only imagining the look on Oikawa's face before? Or has he done something to upset him, somehow? Again?]

Finish...w-wait, Oikawa-san! Don't you want to drink it!? [What's wrong he wants to blurt out instead but he's afraid of getting shut down again.]

[It's okay, no one can keep his actual smiles around long. And Yamaguchi will probably get to see it again at some point.]

I've had most of it, Yama-chan. And you haven't had anything to drink at all.
