[Well, almost a date. Kind of a date. Yamaguchi gave in and let him call it that the last couple of times Oikawa called their meeting that which means officially it's absolutely a date.
He's wearing his favourite cream coat that girls seem to like - hopefully that will extend to Yamaguchi as well - and hovering outside the cafe Oikawa suggested. It's very pink. Practically oozes it. Oikawa didn't expect Yamaguchi to agree to meet him there but it's probably because he didn't realise about the level of pink. The cafe does have good cake though. And a nice sweet bread too.
Oikawa tucks his hands into his pockets and tries not to fidget or do anything so embarrassing as crane his neck to try and spot Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi doesn't object to Oikawa calling him his friend any more, that means he shouldn't stand him up. But still. Oikawa does worry about these things sometimes. Especially when there isn't anything else to occupy him. He rubs his fingers together in his pocket to distract himself keeping a casual eye out for Yamaguchi and resists the urge to text him. Resists the urge to bail on the whole thing as well. It was such a mistake turning up early.]
[Luckily for Oikawa, his lunch date will actually arrive on time today. It's a near thing he isn't late—Yamaguchi has never heard of this particular café before until Oikawa suggested it, and it's in a part of town he rarely frequents unless he's shopping with his mother. He manages to find his way eventually with the help of his phone, but the few poorly lit shots of the restaurant's interior posted on the website don't prepare him for exactly how saccharine it is in dripping pink. If it weren't for the familiar figure of Seijou's setter standing at a distance in front of the café doors, Yamaguchi might think he'd gotten it wrong.]
Hiya! [With a sheepish sort of grin and wave in Oikawa's direction, Yamaguchi ducks his head and walks over. He didn't figure the older boy would actually be waiting for him; Oikawa seems to be more punctual with his free time than Yamaguchi, who tends to be sleepy and slow outside of practice and school. He also feels a little underdressed in his Karasuno jacket and jeans after seeing what Oikawa's wearing, though it may just be Oikawa's the sort of person that could put on anything and make it look nicer than it is.]
[Oikawa spots Yamaguchi when he's still a way away - a perk of him wearing the same thing as the last time Oikawa saw him - and perks up, extracting his hands from his pockets. He's right on time which is a plus. Much longer and Oikawa might have cracked and sent him a message which would have been entirely uncool.
He steps forward to close the last scrap of distance between him and Yamaguchi.]
Yama-chan! So good to see you. [He pulls his smile wider, it really is nice to see Yamaguchi after having a possibly disproportionate amount of fun texting him. Which reminds him-] You're looking cute as always. [Can't let an opportunity for a compliment go by.]
[Yamaguchi may have answered that second part, if he weren't at once distracted by Oikawa calling him 'cute.'] Cyeh–?!
?? !!? [Excuse him, he's probably going red in the face right now, even if it's harder to see with his complexion. Yamaguchi gapes at Oikawa for a few, long seconds and tries to make his brain remember how to talk...and fails.] Uh, trouble?! No trouble...!
[Oikawa attempts to compose himself. Fails more than a little with his smile straining a bit. He might be in trouble. He enjoys teasing Yamaguchi with no regrets but that was when he didn't actually have him standing right there blushing. Yamaguchi is generally cute - freckles and a nervous disposition are things Oikawa can appreciate - but that's... adorable. And also not fair. He doesn't want to have an actual emotion attached to his flirting.
He sorts himself out enough to reply with some of his usual manner but his words come out rushed.] Good good! Missing out on even one minute with Yama-chan because you couldn't find it would be awful.
S-Sorry! I... [Yamaguchi doesn't know Oikawa well enough yet to tell that his smile's forced, and okay, it'd be a lot easier to recover himself and play this off if Oikawa would kindly refrain from complimenting him out of the blue stop that–] Tha...pah...oh yeah, this place!!
It's ah, really fancy-looking? [That's being charitable, it's mostly very pink.] How'd you find out about it, Oikawa-san!?
[Smooth enough for Oikawa. He's tried this tactic on other people but never received quite such a flustered reaction. He wasn't even making a proper effort that time! And Yamaguchi's continued stammering makes a faint (thank god) blush spread across his own cheeks.]
A girl I know took me here so I thought I'd come back with some better company. Do you want to go in?
A girl? [Yamaguchi blinks, staring for a moment, then catches himself and quickly looks away with the hopes it'll hide how red his face still is.] R-Right! Yeah let's, go in?
Hm? [Oh! He didn't think twice about mentioning her, but that probably wasn't the best move.] Yes. She didn't like me much. [They lasted one and a quarter dates - he can't remember her name.
He holds the door open for Yamaguchi and tries not to get distracted by his stammer. Try not to get the pink on you, Yamaguchi.]
Didn't like you? [Yamaguchi seems genuinely taken aback by that. Eat it up, Oikawa.
He nearly misses the other boy holding the door for him, but then he sees and belatedly hurries forward inside the restaurant, eyes widening a bit at all the...pink.] Ah, thanks, Oikawa-san.
[Every time Yamaguchi proves himself nice, Oikawa's usual thoughts stop in their tracks. He's used to everyone understanding immediately why someone wouldn't like him. Yamaguchi's just... nice. It's uncomfortably charming.]
You really don't have to call me "Oikawa-san", Yama-chan.
[A waitress, as pink as the rest of the cafe, appears and shepherds them to a table on the edge. There's a fuchsia (pink) candle in the middle with maroon and lilac glitter sprinkled on it. In a fit of obnoxiousness, Oikawa pulls out one of the chairs and holds it for Yamaguchi to sit on.] I really am glad you came, you know.
[Yamaguchi's not talking too loudly, and when the waitress approaches, he immediately shuts up so as to accommodate her greeting. He lets the topic of nicknames go for the moment, while he and Oikawa are led to their table. In that time, he's distracted yet again by just how vibrantly pink everything is. Yamaguchi only snaps back to the present when Oikawa pulls the chair out for him, and he's nearly too embarrassed by that gesture alone to sit down.]
You...um, you don't have to...th-thanks!! [For that, and the compliment both. Yamaguchi's not usually this flustered, honestly; but then he's not usually alone in the company of a sort of super-charming guy who seems inexplicably happy to share his company, either. Combined with the fact that Seijou's still a rival school, and that Oikawa keeps calling this (treating this??) like an actual date despite his protests, Yamaguchi's pretty damn flustered for a teenager meeting up with a casual friend.]
...This place is kinda different than I expected...
[Draping his coat over the back of his chair, Oikawa takes his own seat. As far as he's concerned, this is a date, whether Yamaguchi wants to call it that or not. Admittedly, he does this to Iwaizumi as well but that's more about making him swear and pull faces than what he's up to with Yamaguchi. Which... He doesn't want to think about because he thought he knew what he was doing here but that doesn't explain why he's smiling properly rather than his usual insincere mask.]
What were you expecting? I wouldn't take you anywhere but the best. [He might have picked it for the atmosphere but their food is nice or he would have found somewhere better.]
I suppose it is a little. But there's some red over there. [He points - it's a heart shaped balloon floating next to the counter, out of a pot plant like a mutant tree.]
he can be a little shit too but he needs tsukki to hide behind
This is the pinkest place I've ever seen. [Which wouldn't necessarily be bad—Yamaguchi's not someone that cares too much about colors by themselves—but the overall effect is pretty garish.]
now all I can picture is yamaguchi sending tsukki out like a pokemon to tell oikawa he's a dick
Wait, show me? [Emphasis on 'me'—if nothing else, it manages to distract Yamaguchi from the pink decor as he looks at Oikawa in surprise.] ...How come?
... don't get me started, I'd think too hard about pokemon types (tsukki = ice oikawa = dragon ohko)
[Well, he likes talking to him, and so far spending time with him is going okay. He does wonder about why he enjoys that but right now he'd rather talk to Yamaguchi than get into uncomfortable introspection.]
yaaaas meanwhile yamaguchi is the normal-est of normal types
I do! [He hesitates. That shouldn't have been a surprise. Has he read Yamaguchi wrong? He doesn't often but there are always exceptions.] Don't you like spending time with me?
oikawa & yama-chan's first date (ノ∀\*)
