[It took over an hour of pacing and biting his nails before Red could even work up the courage to enter the unknown dungeon. Everyone, from the Gym Leaders to the Elite Four to the gatekeeper, had been close-lipped about what exactly lay within. He didn't insist on asking. Red had traveled enough of Kanto to know that whatever unnatural, angry deity lay within the rocky caves of Cerulean should in an ideal world be left alone.
But Red had also traveled enough to know that "should" wasn't going to stop anyone, least of all a pokémon hungry for revenge. Red's stomach churned at the thought of how angry the creature must be, what it could do in its rage. He understood. Completely. That was the frightening thing.
Once he had his affairs in order at the Indigo Plateau, Red sets off, taking a few weeks' detour through the region to find the three creatures he'd need to fight his way through the cave if he wanted to survive long enough to throw the Master Ball. He knew he'd been saving it all this time for a reason.
Red had a plan. He knew anything and everything could go wrong, as a matter of course—that's how things always went, since he left Pallet Town—but at least if he died in this cave, he could say he tried. That was more than a lot of people could say. That was more than Green could...
The sudden sound of voices up ahead startled Red out of his dark thoughts, involuntarily loosening his grip on the Max Repel in his hand. Who on Earth would be traveling a forbidden dungeon? No one else should have access to it but him.
