Sometimes I've called Kageyama. Since his parents don't exactly come home on weekends either, you know....but he was gonna be busy today so...

[Yamaguchi cuts off mid-sentence, pales, then frantically starts backpedaling, having remembered too late exactly who he's talking to (and about).]

...Not that he's better company than you, I mean!! It's really great that you're here instead, Oikawa-san...!

[Smooth, Yamaguchi. Smooth. But his attempt at covering his mention of Kageyama is almost sweet in a way. He cares about Oikawa's feelings regarding Kageyama enough that he'd blurt out something like that.]

Yama-chan. You're allowed to have friends. I'm glad that you had someone else to call. [Sort of. He's sober and older than Yamaguchi so he can't very well say that he'd rather Yamaguchi stays far far away from Kageyama before he becomes a better person as well as a better setter than Oikawa. But he wants to.] But I am better company, aren't I?

Sorry, Oikawa-san. I know you two don't seem to like each other much... [understatement of the year.] ...but you do seem better than Kageyama is, at talking to people.

[He feels guilty about insulting his teammate, even indirectly, though it's true that Oikawa's a bit more charming in the communications department than Kageyama.]

Such flattery, Yama-chan! Being better than Kageyama at talking to people certainly is a feat.

[He should hold his tongue but he's never been good at doing that when it comes to Kageyama.]

It is? [Yamaguchi's too startled to hear that to pretend he isn't startled.]

[Well. This is awkward.]

No, Yama-chan. That was a joke.

...But he's so bad at it. [OKAY IT'S MEAN BUT KAGEYAMA LITERALLY SAYS "GWAH" AND "PAH" LIKE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE REAL WORDS]

He is. Utterly dreadful, that would be what the joke is. [A joke he shouldn't have made and feels like an ass for explaining. He wouldn't mind insulting Kageyama to someone else but he cares about what Yamaguchi think about him.

He considers.] Though he might be better if you got him drunk.

I don't want Kageyama to get drunk again. That'd be awful. [Yamaguchi sighs, bringing up his hands to rub the heels of his palms over his suddenly aching eyes.] He's so sad, Oikawa-san, I dunno what to do. He says he does this alot, like with the vodka last time, and it's no big deal, but I'm scared he's gonna keep going week after week till he gets sick or hurts himself, or, who knows...

He'll cope, Yama-chan. [He both wants to know everything Yamaguchi knows about Kageyama being sad and nothing at all. Apart from reflexive hatred left over from middle school, he can't - doesn't want to - identify his emotions about him.]

Nothing phases him for long. His head is impervious from normal damages and I don't really think there's much going inside it.

[Yamaguchi looks at him curiously, head tilting a little further into the couch as he uncovers his eyes.]

...Do you really believe that, Oikawa-san?

Shouldn't I? It's true. You should have seen him in middle school.

Ah, but he's easier to rile up these days. Makes him seem a little closer to us commoners.

[Yamaguchi withdraws into himself a little guiltily, bringing his knees up to wraps his arms around on the couch.]

...He really doesn't like being called that...

Sorry, sorry. [He isn't, and doesn't sound it, but he'll say it anyway.] Really, you'd think he'd have accepted his place above us by now.

[Yamaguchi closes his eyes tiredly and presses his face into his knees. He thinks he should feel mollified that Oikawa apologized, but it somehow seems worse than when Tsukishima says something awful and then refuses to take it back. Tsukishima rarely says anything he doesn't mean, Yamaguchi thinks to himself through a haze of vodka.]

Mm-hmm... [Now more than ever, Yamaguchi wishes he hadn't brought up the topic of Kageyama to begin with. That's got to be the fastest way to get Oikawa on his bad side...]

[Not necessarily his bad side, but the side that makes him either stop pretending that he's happy or put on his falsest smiles that not even the most socially inept could mistake for sincere. The side that he hates but can't stop.

It doesn't sit well that Yamaguchi didn't agree with any enthusiasm. But he is his friend and Oikawa can't expect him to enjoy insulting him. Except where he almost wants to. He takes a deep breath. Changes the subject.]

Are you tired, Yama-chan?

[It's a few seconds for Yamaguchi to process the words; a few more for the gears in his head to turn enough so that he can work out there's a change in subject. It's welcome when it does get through, though, Yamaguchi doesn't want to make his guest uncomfortable anymore with questions about Kageyama.]

Tired? ...No, not more than usual. [He's kind of a sleepy person by nature, and the biggest difference the alcohol makes in that equation is how much he wants to find somebody else to curl up beside instead of passing out in the futon.] How come?

Just wondering whether it's time to send you to bed. [He's feeling awfully tired all of a sudden and Yamaguchi's spirits don't seem overly high. If he's not ready to though then it's probably better to let him stay up until he's more sober.] But that sounds like you can hold out a bit longer.

[Yamaguchi hums, thoughtfully.]

...Whatd'you wanna do, Oikawa-san? [He feels warm and happy from the alcohol, so he's open to suggestions. Anything will probably sound nice so long as they don't go back to talking about awkward, depressing things.]

I want to spend more time with Yama-chan! But, [he reaches forward to push Yamaguchi's hair back from his face again because he's a terrible person and he definitely needs to see more of Yamaguchi's face to make an assessment] I think I should get you a glass of water and tuck you in.

[Yamaguchi makes—a noise. His eyes go every bit as wide as his face is red, and he shivers a little unconsciously at Oikawa's touch. He obviously wasn't expecting him to do that, and just as obviously, didn't hear a word of what the other boy just said.]

[He brushes his hand over Yamaguchi's cheek as he withdraws it. Smiles gently and sighs.]

I really wish you were sober, right now, so I could kiss you.

[Yamaguchi leans into the touch unconsciously, only pulling back in confusion when Oikawa takes his hand away. His voice is jittery when he tries to speak, blown pupils alternating between searching the other boy's face and glancing away whenever he remembers his embarrassment.]

You...You would really want to, though??

Yes.

[Which is about all he can say when Yamaguchi's drunk and he isn't. Because technically kissing isn't what he wants. What he wants is his lips on Yamaguchi's neck and moving lower but he suspects that Yamaguchi will want to build up to anything more.]

[Yamaguchi hesitates, deliberating and obviously torn up over something. Finally after a moment's agonizing he blurts out,] It's okay...! If you want to, um...do that!!
