I'm not going to die of bloodloss.

[He's pretty sure he'll be okay. And if he isn't well he doesn't have anybody but himself to blame. But it's better than having to go to that guy for help. The cuts he ended up with don't feel too deep either.]

Somebody figured out I was there.

What's that? The genius Kageyama actually made a mistake? [The words slip out before Yamaguchi has time to think about them: though by all accounts, he should probably fear the bleeding man before about twice as much as any of the others, he's just so...Kageyama.

It's impossible not to goad him for the faults he does have, especially after so much time spent with Tsukishima doing exactly that. Really, how does a guy that smart get himself into situations so stupid? Yamaguchi tears off a towelette from the kit and starts dabbing at the cuts a little too hastily to be painless.]

Shut up. [He glares, but that scowl-y face of his is gone when Yamaguchi starts cleaning off his wounds. They really aren't that deep, but they still need stitches.

Careful as he is, sometimes shit happens. And when that happens the best you can do is roll with the punches.

Or knives in this case.]

No one usually gets a hit on you. [...] Who were these guys?

[Yamaguchi's finished cleaning the cuts by now and pulls out the needle and thread from the first-aid kit.]

Seijou.

[So they know him, and he knows them. It was his first real job against his old gang. But hey, at least he's got some experience now, what to avoid and all that.]

Seijou... [The word is said almost in awe, as Yamaguchi knows just how powerful the gang is purported to be. That was where Kageyama himself had come from, too.] It seems like they have you marked as their enemy specifically, Kageyama.

[It's a dubious honor, of course, but Yamaguchi finds he's actually jealous—not necessarily of being a personal enemy to a gang that powerful, but more because Kageyama has the wounds to prove he actually fought them off and made it back all by himself. Yamaguchi wants to be that strong.]

[They're probably top eight in strength and numbers at the moment. But the top level guys are the ones with the best relationships with each other, and the farther down the ladder the less tightknit they become. Or perhaps it was just that Kageyama was threatening to their leader.

Either way, he's part of Karasuno now and he hasn't regretted making the switch.

He snorts.]

Of course they do, I left them.

Umm...why's that? [He's holding up the needle and thread as he asks, motioning hesitantly for Kageyama to give him his arm. Yamaguchi hopes talking will distract the other man from the pain of getting stitched up, though he is genuinely curious about the answer.]

[He does as asked, giving his hand over to Yamaguchi.]

Why I left? [Part of that answer is he didn't like the thought of having to hurt Hinata one day. They weren't incredibly close back then, but the ran into each other every once in a while, back before Hinata joined with anybody.

But that sounds so stupid and sappy Kageyama doesn't want to share.]

I didn't get along with most of the others.

...? [Giving Kageyama a questioning look, Yamaguchi takes a moment to inspect the hand held out to him. Noticing that the skin around the first wound is too uneven and torn to stitch evenly to the other side, Yamaguchi pulls out the medical scissors from the kit to fix it into something actually workable. That done, he finally begins to suture Kageyama's skin, one focused stitch at a time.]

What's the point of joining, if you didn't like them?

[Kageyama grits his teeth and hisses through the pain. He's had worse. He'll be fine.]

It seemed like my best option at the time. Besides, they were strong.

[He can always learn from people who are stronger than him, even if they don't really want to give him the time of day. He seemed to have picked up a few odd things here and there from Oikawa and Iwaizumi's techniques.]

Sorry, Kageyama. [Yamaguchi's as sympathetic for this part as he can be, at least.] Um...is being strong really all that matters to you?

[Tsukishima sure seems to think so, but privately, Yamaguchi isn't sure.]

[He's quiet for a moment.

Power used to be all that mattered to him, but then he grew up. It's not all about that, relationships- especially with his family, mean a hell of a lot. He likes Karasuno, for the most part.]

Not anymore.

Eh? [Yamaguchi pauses, halfway through the stitching. That doesn't sound like the Kageyama that Yamaguchi knew of—the cold-hearted king, who would happily do all the work of a gang and run it himself rather than trusting in others.

Then again...Yamaguchi starts up his sewing again, reflecting on this. He's only going on Tsukishima's word and old rumors regarding Kageyama, after all. End even though Kageyama can be very intimidating when he's angry, Yamaguchi supposes it's also true he really doesn't know the sniper well at all. That was always more the province of–]

...Is it 'cause of Hinata? [Yamaguchi blurts it out without really thinking. Though he doesn't see why it'd be a sore subject, anyway: those two act different when they're around each other, no question about it.]

[He flinches at the name and starts to curl in on himself. It looks a bit like somebody trying to protect their very vulnerable underbelly. ... Not that just curling up that way is going to stop Yamaguchi from prying.]

That has- [Nothing to do with Hinata.

Which is a complete and utter lie, and he's never been good at those.

One very deep and long suffering sigh.]

Maybe.

Yipe-! [Luckily, or unluckily, Yamaguchi's pretty well distracted before Kageyama even finishes his answer.] S-Stop it! Stop moving! Your stitches...!

[whine whine, fuss fuss. he'll have to remove the last two and start again, this is what you get for shying away from your nurse!]

[He groans, but at least he stills. Letting Yamaguchi redo the stitches.]

Sorry...

[Yamaguchi finishes the rest of the stitches with minimal fussing, though he does wince a bit in sympathy and apologize every time Kageyama makes a sound of pain.]

...Th-There...you're done, Kageyama. [NOW KEEP THEM CLEAN SO HE DOESN'T HAVE A HEART ATTACK, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE.] Try not to tear them, okay? Tsukki's gonnna have to take 'em out.

I should've just stuck glue in them.

[No. Bad Kageyama. Very bad.

Yamaguchi sighs, getting bandages out of the kit so the stitches don't meet open air.]

That's really scary, you know? ...Was it you specifically that Seijou's guys were after, or would they have targeted anyone from Karasuno if they'd been assigned to that job...?

[It would heal eventually.]

There's no way they'd have a grudge against anybody else. They wouldn't even know any other faces. ... Maybe Sawamura-san.

...Why were you alone? [Daichi usually makes a point to send Kageyama and Hinata both—even if the mission isn't a specialty or even really a good fit for one of them, the pair seem to work a lot better in tandem.]
